It is not known what Edouard Benedictus did in 1909. Historians of science say that one time this chemist dropped the glass flask on the floor. The glass did not splash all over the laboratory - although it was cracked - it remained in place. Suprised Edouard examined the flask and found that the liquid that had evaporated from it, left on the walls the collodion film which prevented the glass from splatter. He made a mental note of this observation, although he used this experience once he heard about a girl seriously damaged by the glass during the car accident. That's how a random invention proved to be very useful by giving the safe car glass.

Today's safe glass is made in various ways- by the reinforcement, lamination and toughening. The toughened glass is completely different than a regular piece of float glass...It's because of the huge distinction in several parameters of the glass after the toughening process. As a matter of fact, the glass toughening process comes to heating the glass sheet to about 700 C degrees and afterward cooling it with the warm air. This process is similar to heat treatment of the steel.What is the most important, the toughening, apart from high strength, gives the glass the safety features. The toughened glass has a very strong external surface and a fragile core. The broken glass falls apart in many small pieces with the blunt edges. That's why it is called "the safety glass."

The hardening can be applied to float glass, colored in the mass, glass with coatings as well as ornamental glass, which increases the strength and impact resistance. Such glass has increased resistance not only to mechanical factors but also to stresses related to surface temperature changes. Our safety-glass is hardened with one of the most modern methods, so-called horizontal hardening, which gives the exceptional glass strength and leaves no traces of the heat treatment. Tempered glass is currently used in many industries. It is impossible to imagine today's commercial or the railway vehicles without hardened windows.
